Following a comprehensive whole-house renovation of a six-bedroom, late-Victorian residence in London, the owners turned to
Makers to create bespoke furniture that would perfectly complement the contemporary, organic shapes of their newly transformed home. With a reputation for ‘original design, always bespoke’, Makers were the natural choice to realise the clients’ clear vision. The brief encompassed a new kitchen, as well as a boot room, pantry and bedroom furniture, reflecting the family’s desire for a harmonious blend of contemporary style and practicality. Working in close collaboration with Lizzie Spinks, head designer at Makers, the result is a series of exceptional rooms that embody craftsmanship, innovation and effortless luxury, demonstrating Makers’ ability to create extraordinary spaces.
The heart of this home is undoubtedly its kitchen, thoughtfully designed to make the most of a generous rectangular layout. Central to the space is a striking statement island, envisioned as the ultimate hub for family gatherings − ideal for dining, entertaining and working. “We decided to use a rich, dark stained oak for the cabinetry, and thanks to the naturally light and airy setting, we were able to be bold with the choice of stain,” explains Lizzie Spinks, head of design at Makers. “We paired this with a Taj Mahal quartzite waterfall island, and the cream tones contrast perfectly with the dramatic oak.”
The island serves as the centrepiece of the kitchen, instantly drawing the eye with its elegant waterfall worktop and reeded base, both featuring gracefully curved edges for a softer, organic feel. This sense of fluidity is echoed in the bookmatched oak cabinetry of the island, complete with beautifully crafted curved oak handles − something which can be achieved only through masterful, bespoke joinery. The hob run features cabinetry with a sleek design and rounded edge to mirror the island.
A subtle, curved extractor fan seamlessly integrates with the overall design, whilst decorative plasterwork introduces a layer of detail that enhances the space without compromising its minimalist, elegant aesthetic.
The kitchen has been meticulously designed with both style and functionality in mind, ensuring that cooking, entertaining, and everyday routines are effortless. Bespoke cabinetry, created from the same rich, dark oak, houses state-of-the-art VZug appliances, whilst to the right, a breakfast cupboard complete with pocket doors sits adjacent to a spacious pantry, elegantly concealed behind fluted glass doors with a sleek gunmetal frame.
A boot room and a back kitchen was always a must for the homeowners, and Makers designed two elegant yet practical spaces. This back kitchen contains generous storage, a sink and large wine fridge – ideal for keeping the main kitchen clean and clutter-free when entertaining. A striking highlight in the boot room is full-height storage with a recessed seating nook and shoe storage drawers below.
Storage solutions for ‘his and her’ dressing rooms have been designed to echo the architectural curves that define the home’s character. In her dressing room, the bespoke cabinetry, hand finished in a delicate powder pink, features elegant arched details and deep oak interiors, complete with handcrafted, solid oak drawers. In his dressing room, Makers crafted a wardrobe and chest of drawers; made entirely from European oak, the curved edges mirror the kitchen design. These harmonious curves not only produce a sense of seamless continuity throughout the home, but also showcase Makers’ unrivalled craftsmanship.
