After living in their home for over 20 years with grown-up children who have flown the nest, the owners of a London Victorian house realised it was time to renovate their small, tired kitchen, rejuvenating a beloved space that holds many precious memories. To create a more open and functional heart of the home, they embarked on a garden-facing extension, transforming a small room into a generous, light-filled space that formed the perfect canvas for their dream kitchen, in which many more happy memories can be created.
Looking for a bold, contemporary design that still felt refined and sophisticated, the homeowners turned to Makers, confident that only a fully bespoke approach could bring their vision to life. Led by Lizzie Spinks, Head of Design, the team at Makers collaborated closely with the couple to create a kitchen that perfectly hit the brief.
The colour immediately draws the eye in this kitchen: it’s a bold, confident choice that sets a vibrant, joyful tone for the entire space. The homeowners knew they wanted something bright and impactful, but were unsure how to achieve the look whilst maintaining a sense of elegance. Lizzie proposed
Incarnadine by Farrow & Ball. This rich, warm red strikes the balance between playful vibrancy and polished sophistication.
Designing a kitchen around a single bold hue can be a challenge, and there is the risk of it feeling overpowering or quickly dated; it was therefore crucial that Lizzie found the perfect shade.
Incarnadine delivers impact without tipping into excess, complementing the exposed brick wall opposite and giving the room seductive style.
To prevent the single-tone design from appearing flat, texture is thoughtfully integrated to add depth and visual interest. Slim scalloped detailing accents the base cabinetry, whilst a curved edge on the peninsula softens the design. This curve is mirrored in the veined Arabescato Cremo worktop above, which creates an inviting space ideal for socialising and dining.
Subtle design details elevate the kitchen, ensuring it remains beautiful from every angle. Brass elements, such as aged brass panels, a brass inlaid shelf and brass hardware, add warmth and a touch of glamour, effortlessly complementing the red cabinetry.
A standout feature in this kitchen is a dazzling home bar: an essential addition for the homeowners, who are passionate entertainers. Designed for both style and function, it features beautiful walnut interior drawers and glass shelving, offering ample storage for cocktail ingredients and glassware. An antiqued mirror reflects the brick feature wall opposite, creating a striking visual effect. Sleek pocket doors cleverly conceal the bar when not in use, whilst a conveniently placed integrated wine cooler keeps everything within easy reach. The bar is flanked by two generous storage cupboards, ensuring crockery can be neatly tucked away.
