A Modern Farmhouse Haven

Applying a chic, neutral colour scheme to classic country style is an interior trend that is firmly here to stay. When executed well, this combination creates spaces that are effortlessly homely and comfortable with an undertone of ‘subtle luxury’. This trend is perfectly executed by Rachael Somerville (@rachaelsomervilleinteriors), an interiors blogger who recently undertook a whole-house renovation in a modern farmhouse style. Rachael chose Lapicida flooring and surfaces for an authentic, rustic look and a high-quality finish.

The kitchen forms the hub of the young family’s home and, in keeping with the rest of the property, features neutral tones throughout. The cooking zone, which is a satisfying symmetrical design, takes centre stage. Lapicida’s Qualis Rice tiles in the colourway ‘natural’ were chosen for the splashback; with an opalescent glazed finish and an irregular surface, the tiles were the perfect option to break up the matte finish of the cabinetry, whilst adding depth and character to the space. “With a neutral scheme it’s important to add interest with different styles and textures, and utilising unique tiles allowed us to do that.”, says Rachael. The handmade tiles are crafted from hardwearing, easy-to-clean porcelain, making them a low-maintenance choice that is ideal for kitchen use.

A continuation of the neutral theme, the master bathroom also features Qualis Rice Natural tiles. The shower wall tiles are laid horizontally to create contrast with the vertical wood panels of the bathroom walls, proving that texture and pattern plays a vital role in design. A warm wood-effect porcelain floor was selected to bring a rustic look to the space, but with the added benefits of porcelain−underfloor heating compatible, easy-to-clean and hardwearing, it is the perfect option for bathroom flooring. Large format porcelain tiles in a marble effect were applied to the master ensuite shower walls and floors, resulting in a shower that is relaxing and luxurious in equal measure.

To create a bold statement within the utility room, Lapicida’s Bordeaux Argento limestone tiles were applied to the floor in an attractive herringbone layout. Featuring a tumbled finish for a charming time worn effect, the natural tiles showcase a range of warm, neutral shades, enhancing the brass finishes and cream cabinetry. The same tiles were also used in the guest ensuite and ground floor cloakroom, ensuring even the smallest rooms in the house are brimming with character.

Rachael designed the living room to be a tranquil haven in which to relax. Employing the same stylish palette of cream, brown and white, the space exudes warmth and comfort. Using the same Bordeaux herringbone tiles featured in the utility room and master ensuite floor, the fireplace is internally cladded to create a subtle yet beautiful feature. It is the attention to detail and the clever cohesive theme running throughout the home that makes its interior really shine.
