Bathrooms and cloakrooms are increasingly becoming the most colourful and decorated spaces in the home, as smaller rooms such as these can look particularly striking and impactful with bold wallpaper or accessories. Page Louisell, founder of Page Louisell Design, executed this technique perfectly in a grand 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom colonial-style home in Winnetka, Illinois. Each bathroom boasts a distinct personality, and for this ensuite, Page focused on bright colours, intricate patterns and luxurious materials and finishes. Standing against a hypnotic Osborne & Little wallpaper, which displays dynamic fish playing in swirling waters, London Basin Company’s Melody basin is the bathroom’s crowning jewel.
Featuring an intricate Asian-inspired design in an array of colours, the Melody is a basin that immediately commands attention. Flowers, fans, clouds, and graceful scrolls adorn the inside and out, accentuated by a bright white background with subtle gold flecks that playfully catch the light. The handcrafted porcelain basin also includes the image of a pond, with the speckled water containing a delightful display of fish and plant life. The basin is positioned with this detail facing forward so that it is in full sight of the user, cleverly echoing the images on the wallpaper behind it.
The Melody basin and wallpaper complement each other perfectly, together producing a serene yet playful feeling, reminiscent of scenes often displayed in traditional Asian art. They are cleverly elevated by luxurious finishes: a mirror featuring a frame in the style of bamboo is another nod to Asia, and the polished faucet by Waterworks and veined marble countertop add another layer of opulence to the space.
