Classic Meets Contemporary: the Cornish Kitchen by Martin Moore

After deciding to relocate from Europe to the UK, a couple with young children found the perfect plot of land to build their forever home. The plot, perched on a gentle hill, overlooks the sweeping Cornish coastline, and the couple employed a team of skilled architects to design a remarkable, contemporary house. With a uniquely ‘wave’ shaped roof and a clever ‘upside down’ layout, the open plan kitchen, dining and living room is located on the first floor to best enjoy the views. The owners wanted a bespoke kitchen to form the heart of the home with a classic timeless feel and knew Martin Moore could create this.
They looked to David Sant, senior designer at Martin Moore, to design their dream kitchen. David knew it was important to get the balance right; mixing styles and getting a harmonious result is no easy task. He worked with the architects right from the beginning of the project to ensure the proportions of the kitchen would be spot-on and look perfect within the unique space.
The property features floor-to-ceiling windows, taking full advantage of the incredible views. The kitchen is no exception, and this presented a unique challenge for David: to expertly utilise the limited wall space whilst creating a beautiful and functional family kitchen with uninterrupted views of the everchanging coastline.
The solution was to design a kitchen run with generous overhead cabinetry and a large central island with ample built-in storage. This section forms the main hub of the kitchen, with the sink, oven and hob situated in a triangular formation to make cooking as convenient as possible. Additional storage is cleverly integrated on either side of an industrial-style fridge, and a stylish breakfast cupboard is flanked by capacious floor-to-ceiling cupboards specifically designed for food storage.
Martin Moore’s New Deco Collection, which bridges the gap between traditional and modern styles, was the perfect choice for this project. The cabinetry is painted in a fresh white and injected with colour through a light blue island and matching breakfast cupboard splashback, mindfully chosen to reflect the sea views beyond. Both feature the same V-groove detailing for cohesion and subtle decorative interest.
Natural materials connect the kitchen to the outside world; the Calacatta Quartz island and matching splashback contain striking grey veining echoing the dark grey slate floor, and wooden cupboard interiors and accessories mirror the slatted wooden window surround. Every element is considered for a visually cohesive finish, and this kitchen proves that styles can be successfully combined with beautiful results.
