The Straight & Narrow

This bespoke kitchen, designed by Luke Beveridge at DesignSpace London is a masterclass in spatial planning, siting a generously-proportioned and highly functional kitchen within a relatively narrow space.

The footprint was created when the owners decided to rework their interiors, bringing their kitchen forward to take more advantage of the balcony and spectacular views over London’s Regent’s Canal.

Their ‘must have’ priority was an island unit with prepping space and seating. Once the main run of cabinets was added into the plan, with the minimum practical one metre walkway between the two, it left a very narrow space.

This planning issue was solved by making the island long and slim; at 800mm wide, this is the thinnest it could be without looking awkward or unbalanced. In practice, it works perfectly, partnering visually with the dining table at the centre of the open plan space beyond.

Flooded with natural daylight, the kitchen plays to that theme with 60mm thick Carrara marble surfaces, satin-finished white lacquer cabinetry and a white glass splashback. Inset shelving with dark timber linings creates contrast areas within the simple modular forms of the cabinetry, which comes from Modulnova’s Twenty collection.

Behind the sleek exteriors lies a sophisticated and extremely well-equipped kitchen. With high function appliances ranging from steam and pyrolytic ovens to a 4-zone ceramic induction hob and plenty of refrigeration, this is the perfect minimalist kitchen for two keen and creative cooks.
