Classic Meets Contemporary

As part of the redevelopment of this Georgianesque, six-bedroom new build, the owners specified Martin Moore to replace the original kitchen with a handcrafted, bespoke design that bridged the gap between classic and contemporary.

Choosing to move away from the handle-less, minimalist style of the previous kitchen, the clients opted for Martin Moore’s New Deco design. Inspired by the architects and craftsmen of the 1920s, the exceptional craftmanship of the cabinetry achieves all the elegance of a classic English kitchen, whilst its strong geometric detailing and use of feature materials brings a contemporary touch.

It was crucial that the new space be just as practical and ergonomic as it is beautiful. The island plays a central role in creating a social, yet hardworking kitchen that sits comfortably within the large, open-plan space. Not only does it allow the host/cook uninterrupted views of the room and garden, but it also creates a clear distinction between the working and social zones of the kitchen.

Increased storage and worksurface space were an absolute must have for the owners; undercounter drawers were installed in the island and the cooking run, whilst a small run of base and overhead cabinets were sited to the right of the island and hob area.

The main sink was relocated to the side wall of the room with a smaller prep sink being incorporated into the island, leaving more practical, working space. Achieving a sense of drama was also part of the brief; a striking honed Cosmic Black Granite was used for the kitchen’s worktops and splashback, creating a focal point at the far end of the room. Green velvet bar stools and patterned, multi-coloured furnishings add visual interest. This is cleverly juxtaposed with pale grey handpainted cabinetry, to great effect.

Overall, there is a clean simplicity to the design which allows for a natural flow from the kitchen through to the dining and informal living area. Once a space where only one person could easily operate, the new kitchen provides a multi-functional central hub where the whole family can gather.

Previously housing laundry machines, Martin Moore also designed a purpose-built breakfast cupboard for the understair area. The new cupboard takes full advantage of all available space and stores breakfast facilities neatly out of sight when not in use.
