Emerald Dream

Malta’s Balluta Buildings are an Art Nouveau gem. Built in 1928, they were the largest and most luxurious apartments in Europe at that time.

This was one of the first to undergo major renovation and the client’s brief to local architectural practice, Rebirth at Cuschieri Architects was to restore the space to its former Art Nouveau glory, with the addition of modern comforts.

Down to the smallest detail, the choice of materials, fixtures and fittings was crucial throughout, maintaining authenticity and reflecting the exceptional quality of the original apartment.

Taking inspiration from Moroccan hammams, the wetroom, designed to be one of the major wow factors of the apartment, places
Drummonds classic bathroomware centre stage.  A pair of floor-standing Grand shower pipes make a dramatic statement within the space.  Classic fittings soften the masculine feel of the room whilst the Brushed Brass finish provides a warm counterbalance to the vibrant green, geometric tiles which adorn the walls and floor.
Shown here is the wetroom, in a spectacular emerald green with gleaming highlights introduced by the architects’ choice of Drummonds’ Brushed Brass finish for the brassware and accessories. An entirely bespoke finish, the Brushed Brass will age with time creating a patina, perfectly in-keeping with the style of the building.
The large window and high ceilings of this room allowed the architects to create a spacious-feeling bathroom in a relatively small room, accentuated by the continuous tiling on two planes.  The floor slopes to allow water from the twin showers to drain away under the window, a complex feat to achieve in a period building.
