George Spencer Designs is Malabar: an iconic fabric house creating vibrant hand-woven cottons, linens and silks for over 40 years
Originally founded in 1986 by Peter Sterck, Malabar was born out of a deep appreciation for the vivid colours, bold patterns, and the rich storytelling traditions of Indian textiles - elements that were largely absent from the UK market. Malabar, now proudly owned by Lyn Girdler, a long time employee, first expanded into the U.S. market in 2002. Following the passing of founder Peter Sterck in 2019, the iconic British brand transitioned fully to U.S. ownership. Today, Malabar returns to its British roots through a new partnership with George Spencer Designs, the official distributor in the UK.
Named after the Indian region where many of its fabrics are meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, Malabar’s designs are created by ethically managed cooperatives that preserve the ancient art of weaving. Most of the fabrics are expertly woven by hand, ensuring each design is a testament to traditional techniques passed down through the generations.
With a strong commitment to sustainability and exceptional craftsmanship, Malabar’s fabrics are not only strikingly beautiful but also support communities in continuing to preserve their traditional weaving practices. Made from only natural fibres of the highest quality, each design is made with longevity and practicality in mind.
