Limewash with Love: The Eco Choice for Interiors

28 Sep 21

Founded in 1996 by colourist Francesca Wezel, Francesca’s Paints was one of the very first to offer sustainable paints in the UK. 2021 marks 25 years of the original eco paint company and celebrates a life in colour.

It’s no surprise that limewash has become one of the most popular paint finishes in recent years - not only is it easy to apply, but it also has a natural, raw quality that creates a velvety, mottled effect on walls, helping to bring depth and character to interiors. The speckled appearance of limewash is naturally occurring, achieved by the carbonation of the lime. Its history dates back thousands of years; it is one of the oldest varieties of paint and was used to create some of Italy’s most iconic frescos.

Highly sustainable, limewash contains zero VOCs and is plastic free, making it perfect for use throughout the home. It is because limewash is so breathable that it is particularly suited for use in period properties.

All 236 of Francesca’s paint colours are available in a limewash finish. She also offers a bespoke paint making service; she can mix limewash in any colour in the studio and is able to colour match any shade. Francesca’s limewash cures for over a year, giving it a gloriously thick consistency, meaning it requires only two coats on application.
