Bold Blue - A New Kitchen | Living Space from Martin Moore

Built in 2009, the three-storey property was poorly designed with much of the house split into a series of small rooms. After careful planning, it was decided that the whole of the ground floor would be opened up to create an expansive new kitchen/living space. 

Having worked with designer Pam Baker on the creation of their previous kitchen, the owners commissioned Martin Moore for the second time. Pam already knew the family very well and although the house was different, the requirements for the new kitchen were similar. 

It was crucial that the new space could accommodate the whole family at any one time, without the feeling of living on top of one another. In contrast to the cramped, restricted space they inherited, Pam suggested an L-shaped layout which allowed every area of the room to be maximised. 

The main kitchen is cleverly separated from the formal dining/living area using a tall crittall style glass screen. The idea was to delineate the space, whilst still retaining the full visual impact of the kitchen. It also divides the cooking and social zones within the room, allowing the family to come together, without being in each other’s way.

The large central island is positioned within the return of the L-shape and features a softly curved breakfast bar. As well as adding visual interest to the space, the curved design ensures that family and friends can comfortably face each other when socialising. 

The island also houses key appliances and amenities. The scale of the room meant that some areas were not practically zoned. To remedy this, Martin Moore suggested ‘doubling-up’ on crucial elements; a second dishwasher and sink were installed in the island, meaning that the prep and washing up area are sited closely together - a practical benefit for whoever is cooking. 

As every Martin Moore kitchen is entirely designed to order and hand built in their Yorkshire workshops, it allows clients to specify everything right down to custom-fitted drawers and cupboard interiors built around their exact lifestyle and possessions.

Ample storage space was an absolute must have for this family and so Martin Moore incorporated a sizeable larder, wine unit and pull-out spice rack into the design. Two large appliance cupboards flank either side of the window table, one housing breakfast appliances and fridge drawers and the other being used to store food preparation appliances. Deep drawers were fitted beneath the induction hob and additional cupboards were installed below the built-in ovens. 

The overall look of the kitchen is classic contemporary with clean, crisp lines. From the very beginning the clients knew they wanted a dramatic focal point on the far wall.  Taking inspiration from another project they spotted in Martin Moore’s brochure, it was decided that a bold, cobalt blue would be chosen for the elevation, adding a touch of character and helping to break up the expansive space. This was combined with a warm palette of complementary soft greys. The handpainted cabinetry is taken from Martin Moore’s New Classic collection and is accented with polished chrome handles, hinges, and details throughout

A pleasure to cook and spend time in, the new space has become the clients’ favourite room in the house.
