Room For Two | Martin Moore

The owners of a grand Edwardian Mansion dreamed of having two kitchens: one as a designated cooking and entertaining space, and the second as a more relaxed, family-orientated area. Their home offered the perfect layout for this to be executed, with a main kitchen leading into a bright orangery, which was to become the second kitchen. After a major refurbishment to raise the original dilapidated orangery to the same level as the rest of the ground floor, the owners tasked Martin Moore with making their double kitchen idea a reality.

Martin Moore planned the main kitchen with grand-scale entertaining in mind. Capacious storage, a large range cooker and two sinks make it ideal for cooking up a storm - a key requirement of the client who is a keen chef and dinner host. A long island, perfect for prepping, doubles up as a generous buffet bar or serving area for guests. A generous pantry provides ample storage for ingredients and is conveniently located near the cooking zone.

It was important to the client that the property’s heritage was respected whilst making the kitchen suitable for modern living. Martin Moore’s New Classic collection was the perfect option for the furniture. Grand in scale and classic by design, it gives a traditional yet timeless look and works beautifully with the high ceilings and large Edwardian proportions of the property. The kitchen run is hand painted in Martin Moore’s Winter Cloud for a cool and calm feel. Pops of colour are introduced by the blue Lacanche range cooker and the matching island, painted in Ink Blue, creating contrasting elements and visual interest.

During renovation, the historic position of the staircase was retained. At the base of these stairs, conveniently located between the main kitchen and the orangery, is an impressive butler’s cupboard containing ample space for plates, cutlery, glasses and more, easily accessed from both kitchens. This area separates the two kitchens, with the generous cupboard perfectly bridging the rooms and maintaining the flow from one kitchen to the other.

A unique kitchen island with an overhang counter doubles as a spacious breakfast bar, with enough seating for all the family. Painted in the same shade of blue as the main kitchen for coherence, it is perfectly complemented by luxurious velvet bar stools. With sunlight pouring in and a truly inside-outside feel, the orangery is the perfect place for a morning coffee and family catchup; it is a beautiful and private space in which the family can build a lifetime of memories.
