Converted 17th Century Barn

Nestled in the depths of North Yorkshire, this magnificent 17th Century barn required renovation when it became the abode of a couple and their four pets. The impractical, ageing flooring needed replacing in a style sympathetic to the property's history as well as being practical and hardwearing.

The owners chose
Lapicida, located in Harrogate, to provide the flooring throughout the property.  At first, they thought to use reclaimed English flagstone; however, with lots of pets, Lapicida recommended a porcelain floor as being more practical. The ideal solution was their Empire Heritage collection: Italian stone-effect porcelain designed to replicate the beauty of Barr de Montpellier limestone, complete with an antique textured surface and a hand chipped ‘heritage’ edge.

Empire Heritage Gris Fonce is carried throughout the large kitchen, living, utility and laundry room and in a separate detached barn conversion, creating a sense of continuity and flow throughout the property and perfectly complementing the stylish, pared-back interior.

Lapicida’s extensive collection of stone-effect porcelain tiles features a charming, aged finish. Durable with less undulation than its natural stone counterpart, it is a practical choice that is still bursting with character. The collection works well in modern and historic properties, as it is designed to be harmonious with both new and antique natural stone.

The choice of flooring in the bathrooms defines the spaces from the rest of the property. A variation of Empire Heritage in cream-toned Blanc was chosen for the guest ensuite and helps to create a sense of tranquillity. Marmi Extra marble-effect porcelain features in the master bathroom and perfectly complements the grey colour scheme; showcasing dramatic veined patterning to replicate the organic colour variation of marble, this tile is the perfect porcelain alternative delivering a realistic and natural result.
