Brought to Southern Spain during the Moorish period, the Majolica method of decorating pottery brought rich, vibrant colours to terracotta, particularly floor and wall tiles. The ancient technique uses already fired clay, covering it with an opaque glaze-base and then decorating it using bright colours. The clay is then fired once more, achieving a glossy, water-resistant surface. Highly ornamental, these designs became incredibly popular throughout the Mediterranean and were used to decorate palaces and churches amongst other interior settings.
