The Penthouse Kitchen

Characterful eaves with deeply arched window embrasures give this room great presence, but it required expert planning to design and build a high-function kitchen around such dominant architectural features.

Custom-built by DesignSpace London, this kitchen is in the penthouse of a development of luxury apartments in West London by Fusion Residential.  At its heart is the spectacular central island, clad in vein-matched natural marble, giving the look of a monolithic, sculpted block.  The hob is positioned on the island, making cooking a social activity, but steam and odours are eliminated by a powerful in-ceiling extractor above.  The black marble and bronze-framed breakfast bar at the end of the island forms another sculptural block. Keeping it social, the whole kitchen is designed to face into the adjacent living space, when the doors are open between the two rooms. 

Highly engineered and beautifully constructed cabinetry from Modulnova’s Fly collection runs along a whole wall, tapering elegantly down into the eaves at one end.  Drawers and cupboards are on a grand scale, effortlessly holding kitchen essentials, from appliances, pans, crockery and cutlery to wine and dry stores. This keeps the island surfaces clear, enhancing the powerful, minimalist feel of this kitchen. A large walk-in pantry (through a door in the opposite wall) makes great use of a quirky space in the eaves, with shallow shelves on three sides perfect for storing dry goods and other ingredients.
