The Sculptural Kitchen

02 Oct 18

Fully open plan living can be challenging, as activities can overlap.  The new thinking is all about ‘broken plan’ which allows areas to either flow together or operate separately.

This custom-built kitchen by DesignSpace London is in a development of luxury apartments in West London and a great example of flexible planning.  The entire floor can be open plan, but double pocket doors allow the kitchen/dining area and sitting room to be separated when required.

Viewed from any angle, the kitchen is a thing of beauty, dominated by the central island, clad in vein-matched natural marble to create the look of a monolithic, sculpted block.  The hob is positioned on the island, making cooking an intensely social activity, but steam and odours are eliminated by a powerful in-ceiling extractor above.  The bronze-framed breakfast bar at the end of the island forms another sculptural block.  A formal dining area is sited at the garden end of the room.

Highly engineered and beautifully constructed cabinetry from the Modulnova Fly collection runs along the outside wall, framing the large window.  Drawers and cupboards are on a grand scale, effortlessly holding kitchen essentials, from appliances, pans, crockery and cutlery to wine and dry stores. This keeps the worktops clear, maintaining the architectural feel of the kitchen.
