New Basins and Vanity Stands

London Basin Company’s richly decorated porcelain basins bring a classic art form to contemporary bathrooms. This year they will be exhibiting their new metal vanity stands alongside the original ten basins and five exciting new basin designs. Together the collection offers a new look at craftsmanship and luxury.

Founded by interior designer Anna Callis and her daughter Nathalie, the concept grew from a search for a decorative basin to use in a project. The product Anna had in her mind simply did not exist, so she set out to create it. It took more than three years to develop the patterns and find the right porcelain factory to produce exquisite quality basins embellished with Anna’s own designs. Inspired by her travels, they cleverly meld a modern aesthetic with several centuries of decorative art from China, Japan, the Middle East and Europe.

Every basin is hand finished using a variety of techniques. The patterns are applied in two main ways 'under the glaze' and 'over the glaze'. With under the glaze decorating, the pattern is applied to the porcelain, then the basins are glazed and fired. In the over the glaze technique, the basins are glazed and fired, then the pattern is applied and the basins are fired twice again to ensure paint durability.  The porcelain too, is strong and resilient, perfectly suited to bathroom use.

Anna Callis designs her basins to work as focus pieces in both classic and modern bathrooms. The choice of accompanying brassware will define the finished look and the basins sit perfectly with period or modern taps, in any finish from chrome to nickel, brass and gold.

In tune with this, London Basin Company’s chic new collection of handmade metal vanity stands comes with bespoke tops in a range of materials including wood, glass and laminate. The stands make a perfect match to the, now, fifteen different basin designs, which range from classic blue and whites to richly coloured patterns with gilded highlights. Generously sized, the basin dimensions in the range run between 39.7 and 45cm diameter and 14 to 16.2cm in height

DECORATIVE DETAIL
SEPTEMBER 5TH 2017

“The design is in the details” - an often-heard phrase and certainly true of the Clarabelle basin from the London Basin Company.  A gorgeous focus piece, Clarabelle’s intricate design features ancient Chinese patterns combined with more contemporary floral motifs.  Hints of gold add an extra luxurious finish.

TRANQUIL BLUE & WHITE

NEW FROM LONDON BASIN COMPANY
JULY 7TH 2017

We were pleased to be working with talented stylist Hannah Bort and interiors photographer Darren Chung on the latest photoshoot for the London Basin Company. Hannah, formerly of Elle Decoration, is brilliant at modern interiors and has a great eye for colour so her brief was to give the basins a more contemporary look but maintain an aura of sophistication. Hannah created striking sets with plaster effects and painted panelling to add texture and depth and chose rich nature-inspired colours to contrast with the vibrancy of the hand decorated porcelain basins.

There were both existing and new basin designs included in the shoot together with some new vanity stands from the London Basin Company, which will be launching later in the year. The shoot also featured some exciting new taps from The Watermark Collection. The Melody basin shown here is one of the most popular designs, decorated inside and out in rich colours with an oriental inspired pattern, shown off here on a sage green plinth against a leaf green hand-painted panelled wall.

CREATING THE PERFECT SMALL BATHROOM WITH ANNA CALLIS
APRIL 3RD 2017
A small bathroom can make a real statement. Interior designer Anna Callis gives her top tips for decorating a space which may be small… but can still be perfectly formed.

•Clever Storage - Keep the space clutter free with concealed storage. If you can, build into the wall void to gain additional space, either for cupboards or for display niches. Keep cupboard handles discreet or use touch opening systems.  Keep shelves shallow so you can see what’s on them.

•Mirrors - Mirrored glass conjures up the illusion of space. Panel the walls in mirror and even consider hanging another mirror over the top. To give contrast, combine antiqued and plain glass.

•Colour - Small bathrooms lend themselves brilliantly to colour, but as a rule it’s “all or nothing” as painting or wallpapering just one or two walls will make the space seem smaller. To add even more interest wallpaper one feature wall and paint or tile the others in a related colour.

•Decorative Finishes - A small bathroom can be a jewel box and highly decorative. Consider creating extraordinary textural effects, for instance applying laser cut designs in metal or wood to walls or cupboard fronts.

•Lighting  - Even in a small bathroom you need both bright task lighting around the basin and subtle diffused lighting in the rest of the room.  Make it adjustable and independently controlled so you can create the right mood at the right time.

•Design Features - Once you have set the backdrop of colour, texture and lighting, consider one or two (no more) remarkable ‘design focus’ pieces to pull it all together.  This could be something like one of our richly decorated basins and some beautiful taps.

INTRODUCING THE LONDON BASIN COMPANY
OCTOBER 20TH 2015
Founded by interior designer Anna Callis and her daughter Nathalie, London Basin Company makes richly decorated porcelain basins, reinventing a classic art form for contemporary bathrooms.

The concept grew from Anna’s search for a decorative basin for a project she was working on.  The idea she had in her mind simply did not exist, so she set out to create it. It took more than three years to develop the patterns and find the right porcelain factory to produce exquisite quality basins embellished with Anna’s own designs.

At first glance, the patterns appear to be traditional themes, but a closer look quickly reveals the complexity of Anna’s designs. Drawn from her travels and researches, they cleverly interweave iconic themes spanning several centuries of decorative art from China, Japan, the Middle East and Europe.

Every basin is a one-off, hand finished using a variety of techniques. The patterns are applied in two main ways 'under the glaze' and 'over the glaze'. With 'under the glaze' decorating, the pattern is applied to the porcelain, then the basins are glazed and fired. In the 'over the glaze' technique, the basins are glazed and fired, then the pattern is applied and the basins are fired twice again to ensure paint durability.

Not only are the patterns extremely durable, the porcelain itself is also strong and resilient, perfectly suited to bathroom use and easy to keep clean using mild detergents. It is fabulously tactile and has the resonant ‘chime’ of all fine china bowls.

Selling online, exclusively from its own site, London Basin Company currently offers ten different basin designs and a variety of shapes.  Colours range from blue and white to richly coloured patterns with gilded highlights.  Generously sized, the basin dimensions in the range run between 37.9 and 45 cm diameter and 15 to 16cm in height.

Anna Callis designs her basins to work as focus pieces in both classic and modern bathrooms. The choice of accompanying brassware will define the finished look and the basins sit perfectly with period or modern taps, in any finish from chrome to nickel, brass and gold.

Perfectly on trend with the move back towards colour and pattern in interiors, London Basin Company offer a new look at luxury for bathrooms, transforming the basin from a utility to a work of art in its own right.
