COLOUR AND LIGHT
MARCH 11TH 2015

Edward Bulmer and Sally Storey made for an engaging double act at their Colour and Light event at John Cullen’s showroom yesterday evening. Sally, the UK’s leading lighting expert, and Edward, an architectural historian, interior designer and ‘colour man’ are both at the top of their fields and were well placed to discuss some of the science behind and interplay between colour and light.

The talk began with Edward demonstrating the impact that lighting can have on a colour scheme by placing swatches of his colour
French Blue on shelves with different types of lighting on each shelf. Seen in different light strengths and warmths the swatches looked like completely different colours. Edward later explained how natural pigments have properties that their synthetic imitations cannot achieve, revealing the palette of core pigments that have been used to create colour for millennia.

Using inspirational images of their projects, Edward and Sally discussed some of the thinking that goes into creating lighting and colour schemes in contemporary and traditional interiors. Sally showed photos of her projects in daylight and at night with the lights on, showing how light can change the mood of an interior and create drama in otherwise dull areas.

The talk demonstrated the amount of thought that goes into these projects, proving that it’s definitely better to call in the experts when looking at colour schemes and lighting inside and out.
